Don’t get fooled by Phishing attemps
I just had an email which was supposedly from HSBC bank, it had the usual blurb about ‘security’ and ‘an attempt has been made to access your account’ etc.
I know this isn’t true as I don’t have a HSBC account, but a lot of folks do so a good percent of this phishing attempt will hit the inbox of someone who will be genuinely worried by it.
My advice to anyone who may be affected by this is very, very simple:
Never follow any links in an email
and
Always go direct to the bank’s website by typing the web address directly into your browser
Don’t look at the email FROM address and persuade yourself it might be legitimate. The email that I got was from hsbc.online.co.uk which at first glance looks to be real, but look closer and see the use of the . (dot) in between hsbc and online it’s a blatant attempt to look correct but in actual fact that domain doesn’t exist.
Please don’t risk it, never click on a link in an email that’s alerting you to a security problem, it’s a trap. If there was a real security issue, your bank would probably write to you and put a stop on your account. Always login to your online banking through a proven and trusted method by going direct to the bank’s website
